The Coke Conundrum

The Coke / Pepsi divide has sparked debate for many years. Those involved take their sides, dig in their heels & fail to get anywhere. But it seems the land lords and bar men and women of our fine country think they know which we prefer.

Whenever your writer (yes darling, that’s me) goes forth to order “a whiskey coke please” in establishments which side with the latter of the aforementioned rivals, one invariably gets the rather apologetic response of “I’m sorry, it’s Pepsi” to which one must begrudgingly bow his or her head in a dejected nod of acceptance.

Some venues go so far as placing a small plaque behind the bar to insure to scare off the unwary connoisseur in search of Coke by stating “The cola we serve is Pepsi”; as if to say, don’t even bother asking. It’s not worth it.
